Reducing phono output level of tuner? by Patrick Hogan
Hi group, I've just been given a nice Technics tuner, but it pumps out a very high signal from its phono output - the amp only needs to be turned up to about 10% for the volume to be too high. I know I'm going to be listening to the CD player, with the amp at 25%, then switch over to the tuner, and get blasted out of the room! What is the best (actually simplest and cheapest) way to reduce...

FS: Koetsu Black Cartridge for rebuild by [email protected]
Comes in presentation case I just contacted Koetsu and they charge $750 (about £330) for the rebuild or via Expert Stylus for about £300. (Koetsu replace everything but the outer shell. ESCo will replace cantilever with a new stylus -- your choice). The cost of this cartridge plus a Koetsu rebuild is still over $1000.00 less than buying new. No cantilever and is confirmed rebuildable. This has...

Problem receiving ClassicFM by Maurice Batey
I'm hoping someone here can either help directly or suggest another more suitable group. I've just moved from by the sea near Lymington, Hants, where my JVC receiver could pull in a 1st-class signal for ClassicFM using just 3 ft of co-ax hung behind a cupboard as aerial, to an area between Farnham and Hindhead, where there is an odd problem with the signal. (Because this is a fringe area I've...

suggestions on a decent integrated amplifier by corks
Hi, Just wondering what people's opinions on a decent integrated amp would be to go with a Denon DVD2900 and Monitor Audio Silver S6. I dont listen super loud and i prefer a nice tight sound that stays faithful to the original source material - no bommy bass or exaggerated treble. i listen to all sorts of music , but in particular i like Dead Can dance, New Order, David Sylvian, Durutti...

Quad 405: dud electros ? by Phil Allison
Hi to all the Quad fans, I have been refurbishing a circa 1977, Quad 405 that has been long out of use. The dark red, PCB electros were found to have all completely failed - the 47 uF and 100uF ones on the amp PCBs tested virtually open circuit. The 10uF, 40 volt bi-polar ones on the triac PCB had depolarised, becoming caps of about 65 uF and only a few volts.

Record Cleaning Machines by Serge Auckland
As I buy used vinyl (record fairs, car boot sales, charity shops) from time to time, I'm thinking about getting a record cleaning machine (hopefully used but in good condition) to remove the layers of crud sometimes found on such items. Can anyone recommend any one machine over others? I rather favour the Keith Monks, but haven't seen one on Ebay for a long time, if ever. What about the...

Wharfedale 505.2's - Replacement tweeter by Barney Rubble
It's a long and final shot, but for some strange reason I used to really like my 505.2's, which were in my office. I have had them for probably 8-10 years, and they have always served me well. I bought them from the UK to the US when I moved here, and they were working great until an unfortunate experience involving a microphone on a VOIP headset and an amp turned up too much that caused a...

Tuner memory by harrogate3
After decorating the lounge I have reconstructed my hi-fi stack and rewired it so that the only item with permanent mains is the VCR - everything else goes through am electronic switch. I have now discovered that my Kenwood KT2060L tuner clearly has only a capacitor to back up the memory - it does not have a battery or use E2PROM - so when the mains has been off for a day or less it forgets. I...

SACD players by Eiron
A search through usenet reveals the popular opinion that universal players convert SACD data into PCM, thus losing all of the sonic benefits of SACD. Another opinion is that this only applies to the digital output; the analogue outputs are properly converted. Does anyone know the truth about this? -- Eiron No good deed ever goes unpunished.

1/8th jackplug by The Reid
I have an Ion USB deck that takes input from tape decks via a "1/8th jackplug". The Maplin catalogue has no such object. Wikipedia says its the same as a 3.5mm jack, so I tried Maplins one (Nikai brand) and it doesnt go into the recessed hole because the body of the plug is slightly too fat, cant tell if the jack itself will fit. Anybody know a specific product that would fit? -- Mike Reid I...

The measure of the flamemongering scum on RAT by Andre Jute
Everyone knows that RAT is the target of all kinds of scum who come here only to conduct flame wars. Most of them, like Worthless Wiecky, are, well, worthless. They are the only ones who think they're clever. Silence is the most scathing comment one can make on their mindless witterings. Some, like Carlson and Yeager (Yaeger?) are crooked garage vermin hoping to make a buck but unable to button...
