The role of 'fake science' in audio by Eeyore
The following characteristics have been argued by the cited authors to be useful in identifying pseudoscience. Use of vague, exaggerated or untestable claims Assertion of scientific claims that are vague rather than precise, and that lack specific measurements as a basis . Failure to make use of operational definitions Failure to adhere to the principle of parsimony, i.e. failing to seek...

I'll rate your stereo, no charge. by George M. Middius
Donkey humor ... it stinks like a turd, it looks like a turd, and it squishes like a turd. What a waste of money ! I'll bet you don't even get laid that often with crock like that ! Hookers must be expensive in your neck of the woods, Poopie.

Source of speaker stands in the UK by Simon Finnigan
Hi all, I`ve been given a SphereX XBox 5.1 surround system for use in the living room. Sounds nice enough to me, has all the connectors I need etc, but i`m having problems finding speaker stands that are suitible. All the stands i`ve seen so far are too narrow to pass the RCA connector all the way down, and don`t allow room to pass the cable out the bottom of the speaker and at an angle,...

It wuz on the telly... by Keith G
....so it must be true! On the telly, earlier this evening, Paul Gambaccini was reported as having said he thought the 7" vinyl single could outlive the CD!! As I said here a long time ago - vinyl singles are on the up. Don't hold me to these figures but I believe the recent UK sales have been along the following lines: 2001 - £178,000 (approx)

MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC by housetrained
We all love music on this ng. Some strive for perfection, some are so busy seeking fidelity they end up listening to the quality of the reproduction rather than the music itself. Knew a guy once, long ago, who would play a Shure cartridge test LP over and over:-) Does it matter if we have valves, transistors, washing boards or tea chests. Let's all ENJOY. PS After spending all that money, am...

More Wagner by Eiron
For those who enjoyed a whole day of Wagner's Ring Cycle in April, Die Meistersinger is on BBC Radio3 at 18:30 today. I still don't know why my Creative sound recorder gives up at 2GB, even on an NTFS filesystem. Perhaps there will be a suitable break to change files. -- Eiron

computerless mp3 ripping by andy
Anyone seen something like this in the uk? http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/en-US/modeldetail.html?ProductID=RS2054 Girlfriend would like an mp3 player, but she has no desire for a computer, so this would be ideal for her to transfer her CDs to mp3.

BBC/Rogers LS5/8s plus modded Quad 405s - mains hum by spwyatt
I've just been lucky enough to have purchased a pair of the stunning Rogers/BBC LS5/8 speakers, complete the with a pair of the BBC modified Quad 405 frequency splitting amps (actually, one 405 and one 405-2... no idea why!) The main problem is that both amps exhibit a low level but perfectly audiable mains hum - even with their gains right down and nothing plugged into the (XLR) inputs. Am I...

Spitchy N Glitchy by Keith G
This track was posted some time back for 'offlist purposes' (in the context of 'guitar doesn't have to be at breakneck speed all the time to sound good'...) it's not the cleanest ever, yes I know it clips at the very beginning and yes I know it's not a guitar..... But it's got to come down in favour of the late, great Ian Dury's 'There Ain't Half Been Some Clever *******s' later on, so...

Thanks for the advise. plus the big WHY by Uncopyrightable
Cheers guys (and who knows girls too) Thanks for the advise, it would seem that I am gonna visit maplin et al tomorrow, but for only a quid a metre I think I will parallel wire.... WHY, ah the question so many asked.... when I upgraded the speakers I used my old QED silver anniversary (9+yrs old, £5.00m cable) I unfortunately smacked a nail right through it, now it crackles, plus the wife...
