Which end of the resistor is up? by
Andre Jute
About twenty years ago a fellow who wrote DIY articles for one of the
UK audio mags, maybe his name was Andy Bland, made a joke: "Which end
of the resistor is positive?" The magazine got a lot of replies from
people claiming to be qualified in electronics telling him which end of
the resistor is positive...
The internet is a *lot* like that. Except more so.

Soundstage and depth of image by
mb66
Hello, perhaps someone out there can help me - some years ago I
purchased a hifi setup which relative to other kit I listened to
sounded good. It was a Restek CD, Pre-amp and monoblocs, along with
some Dynaudio Craft speakers. The sound was improved with some quality
cardas golden cross leads and a Townshend seismic sink. My problem is
this, when demo-ing speaker cables a friend who worked in a...

FR Speaker Kits by
Keith G
David Houpt sent me this link direct:
https://secure.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/acatalog/Fostex_Flat_Pack_Cabinets.html
and I think it would be of interest to one or two here - FR speakers made
easy!!
Loopy value if you ask me - by the time you have bought the board and the
machinery to work it (if you didn't already have it) you would soon be up
this sort of money.

Micromega Stockist? by
Maria
Hi
I am looking for a Hi-Fi dealer that stocks Micromega products in the
UK?
(I've checked the micromega.co.uk website but both contact addresses
don't work. They have a short list of dealers, but looking them up on
the net, they don't seem to have anything but high end products, if
they have them at all. I am looking for the low end stuff, A60 Amp, CD
player, Tuner, or the three unit...

A celebrity visits RAT by

Chris Hornbeck
"I expect a black silence that is almost as violent as laughter."
- Jean Cocteau, 1932
Jean Cocteau? Cocteau? Ah, I got him, the fellow who got to be famous
for dying on the same day as the Sparrow of France, Edith Piaf. Well, I
guess that qualifies him as enough of a celebrity to get onto Big
Brother.

noisy sound-card/Sony amp Setup by
[email protected]
I have a Sony separate stereo setup. I'm not an expert in setting it
up, and would like any comments that could be offered. I acquired it
from a junk skip where someone had dumped it purely because one of the
sound channels was down, but upon inspection it turned out to be a
broken track where the headphone socket fixes to the board. With a
little care and a lot of soldering experience, I...

Ideal room size by
MrBitsy
I am planning on moving in the next couple of years, so the wife and I have
been discussing houses. Of course I want a room dedicated to music - just
what is the ideal size room?
My speaker manual suggests I need the speakers X cm from the rear and side
walls, but what about space around the listener? Should there be the same
amount of space behind the listening position, as between the...

Tube amp kits by
Sander deWaal
mike said:
Hi And Thank you Sander.
I went through the portal already. Many broken links. 95% of the kits
available are flea powered SE. Some one out there must be designing and
selling el34 or kt88 based amps that do not cost more than already made
amps.
I can buy PrimaLuna Prolouge six's or seven mono amps for less than most
kits I have seen.

Tim Guy
I would love to build my own HiFi Amp.

particular plans.
Id like to maybe Bi-Amp and defo Bi-Wire

Arny drops a bollock.... by

Arny's slipped up and replied to one of my posts in a direct email. I have
transported it here entirely - apart from anything else, I don't do rufty
tufty in my private correspondence!
(No idea where it belongs, so I've started a new, exciting thread with it!

A bit of history. by
Eiron
I was looking at 'Audio Electronics' by the late John Linsley Hood this morning
while waiting for the newspaper to arrive, and was amused by this:
" Experiments in the late 1940s suggested that the level of audibility for
second and third harmonics was of the order of 0.6% and 0.25% respectively,
and this led to the setting of a target value, within the audio spectrum, of
0.1% THD, as desirable...

Arcam DV79 vs Technics SL-PG590 by
Glenn Richards
After setting up my system in the new house recently, my friend (who
knows a lot less than he thinks about audio) wanted to know exactly why
I'd spent £1,000 on a DVD player. (Actually I spent £530 on it, but
that's another story. It's still a £1,000 DVD player.) And he was
insistent that there was no way it could be worth the £900 price premium
over the Technics 590 player.
Firstly I...
